Why is there talk of getting rid of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy for the military?

I understand that it may seem like an infringement on someone who is gay in the military, but it won't help them if this policy is banned. The current policy keeps them from being discriminated against for recruiting, rank advancements, and whatever else. Allowing others to know and ask would only put their jobs in jeopardy.
